HATCH’S 2014 YEAR IN REVIEW

HATCH’S 2014 YEAR IN REVIEW

Hatch Team - 2014 Year In Review
Our team of talented interior designers; (from left to right) Leigh Blackburn, Tanya Wassen, and Rachel Clarida.

2014 sure was an exciting one for Hatch Interior Design. A growing team, a number of great projects and clients, and some pretty sweet awards are the highlights of our 2014 year in review.

Hatch Team Addition

The Hatchette’s received another member – Tanya Wassen. Tanya came to us with an Interior Design degree and commercial interior design work experience from Calgary. Since she started in June, she’s worked on several interesting & fun projects, including Andover Terrace, Bone Appetit, & Grand Forks City Hall. She is currently working on becoming a Registered Interior Designer and plans to write her NCIDQ examination in the new year. Welcome Tanya, we are excited you’re with us!

Projects

Our 2014 projects were all very exciting for us and each stands out as being unique to their own brand strategy. We think that businesses in the Okanagan and surrounding areas understand that the interior design of their space helps their brand stand out from their competition and it pays off. Like we say…Because Good Design is Good Business.

Grouse River Offices

Grouse-River_Corridor - Hatch Interior Design 2014 Year In Review
Another successful project for Grouse River was completed in July, 2014; this time an office space dedicated to staff.

Hatch kicked off 2014 with our second project with Grouse River, their new offices located behind their award winning flagship store. Our client knows that their employees are the heart of the organization and wanted their offices to be functional as well as aesthetically beautiful to energize their staff and strengthen their brand. The outdoor and topography concepts that were showcased throughout the store were re-imagined for their office space. We incorporated bold graphics, natural materials, and a vibrant colour palette to tie into their branding & showcase unique details. TKI Construction was the GC, always a pleasure to work with and their attention to detail is fantastic. The final space evokes a great sense of adventure and provides employees with a productive and energetic space to complete their important work. Everyone involved, particularly the Grouse River team, are absolutely stoked with how it all looks together.

Nuvue Optometry

Nuvue Optometry - - Hatch Interior Design 2014 Year In Review
Our team nailed it with Nuvue Optometry’s new clinic completed in August, 2014. We are having photos done soon, can’t wait to show you!

This project was an absolute dream for Hatch. Our awesome clients – Nuvue Optometry’s Doctors Brad & Devon Almond gave our team design freedom to create something unique, bold, and cool. ANR construction was the chosen GC; Mark and his team were top notch in building our design. They were friendly, responsive, and fun throughout the process, as well as on time and on budget. Their trades took great care in all the details in the project. We’d like to give a special shout out to Top 40 Woodworks in Kamloops who built all of the amazing custom millwork. The curved plywood features were no small task; the craftsmen at Top 40 really took pride in this project and it shows. Just stop by and take a look; you’ll see the space Nuvue is so proud of! We’ll have some photos for you early in the new year as well for those out-of-towners.

Grand Forks City Hall

Grand Forks City Hall - Hatch Interior Design 2014 Year In Review
A marriage of historic and modern, Grand Forks City Hall will be completed by the end of 2014 so our Client can kick off 2015 in their new digs.

A historical building, a fire, unforeseen circumstances, and a modern design juxtaposed with tradition gives us our Grand Forks City Hall project. The office interior of the original City Hall for Grand Forks was completely gutted by an unfortunate fire in 2013. The remaining main floor was a clean, open space with beautiful original structure to design with. The goal of the entire project was to maintain the history of the building, while bringing it back to life with modern and clean forms and the result is impressive. We looked to the Grand Forks’ recent rebranding for more inspiration, and took on a black and white colour palette with warm wood tones in order to really enhance some original details. The final design is a bold and unique take on the traditional government space, and was just wrapping up at the end of 2014.

Il Tavolino

Il Tavolino
Il Tavolino, Kelowna’s newest Italian bistro and gelateria, was completed in August, 2014. Watch for project photos sometime in January, 2015.

Who doesn’t like sipping cappuccinos and enjoying authentic Italian gelato in a beautiful sun-soaked interior? No one…that’s who! How does someone create such an enticing space you ask? Well you need some key ingredients:

  • an authentic Italian cook – check
  • a seamless vision between client & designer to bring modern yet old world charm to the Okanagan – check
  • a South East facing space with expansive windows – check

In the spring of 2014, all these ingredients came together for Hatch’s project – Il Tavolino. Alessandro & Sarah DeAngelis were back in Canada from living and learning abroad in Florence, Italy and wanted to bring their experience back to the Okanagan. Sarah is an established Residential designer in the Okanagan, but asked Hatch to collaborate with her on their project because commercial projects are what we do best. The final collaborative project included an efficient layout, encaustic concrete tile, reclaimed wood, marble stone, brass lighting, and custom elements such as the stained pattern on the concrete, and the CNC cut metal panels. These elements together married the old world charm of old Italy with a clean and modern aesthetic, suitable for a fresh new bistro in Kelowna. Il Tavolino has been busier than expected and looking forward to a successful year ahead – thanks to all of you who have supported them.

The Boutique

The Boutique - Hatch Interior Design 2014 Year In Review
The Hatch Team enjoyed designing this elegant clothing boutique which opened its doors August, 2014.

This women’s clothing store located in Armstrong, BC really makes their customers feel special & beautiful while perusing the classic clothing selections. The Boutique is only 700 square feet in a 100 year old building, so we carefully designed suspended clothing displays which allow the space to feel more open. Many of the shoppers comment on how large the store feels. We focused on a clean but pretty vintage style interior with feminine accents, such as floral drapery, brushed brass metal, and a warm colour palette. One of our favorite features in the design is the custom ceramic plaques where our Interior Designer’s collaborated with a local artisan (Carolina at Arte Funktional) to create the one of a kind pieces. Kathleen, our client, showed a true appreciation for using local artisans who greatly helped in achieving the beautiful end result.

Awards

And what?! We received a prestigious IDIBC award for our Grouse River retail project. We are so proud of this exciting accomplishment for our young design firm; it was a great honour to attend the Shine Awards in Vancouver and receive our award. We were inspired to see the other great design projects featured throughout BC.

Our Grouse River retail store took home an IDIBC Shine Award in September.

Hatch’s own office expansion project & Grouse River retail have also been shortlisted to win an Okanagan Tommie Gold Award for best commercial space, with a guaranteed Silver award for both projects. We are very excited that we are being recognized within our region by our colleagues in the building industry for our design expertise. The award ceremony is in February, so we will wait and see if our projects are the chosen ones to win.

We are up for a Gold Tommie award this coming February for our own office, as well as for our Grouse River retail project (the two photos on the bottom). We are already guaranteed a Silver for each project and, as you can see, have some stiff competition for Gold!

Finally, we are so thankful for all those in our community who took a moment to vote for their favorite local businesses in Okanagan Life Magazine. Because or your support we were recognized for a second consecutive year as one of the region’s top Interior Design or Architecture firms. Thank you to all the voters and congratulations to the other winners on a job well done!

And that’s a wrap on Hatch’s 2014, now let’s bring on 2015 – we’re excited for what’s in store! We wish all of our readers a very Merry Christmas and catch you in the new year!
